Lansdowne Road Aviva International Rugby Stadium, Ballsbridge is located a mere 5 minute walk from the Pembroke Townhouse.
Lansdowne Road Aviva Stadium is long synonymous with the Irish International Rugby Team, but over the past two decades it has also become the home of Irish Soccer.The oldest international rugby ground in the world, it has seen many developments over the past 130 years.
In March 2007, Lansdowne Road International Rugby Aviva Stadium was given the go-ahead for it's redevelopment into a new 50,000 capacity all-seater venue over 2.5 years, as a joint venture between the FAI and the IRFU. Work on the Lansdowne Road site began almost immediately with the old stadium being demolished over a four month period. Work is now well underway on the construction of the new Lansdowne Road Aviva Stadium which has a proposed completion date of early 2010.
The 50,000 compares with the existing Lansdowne Road Aviva Stadium which has an all seated capacity, as required for competitive Soccer, of 36,000 and a mixed standing and seated capacity of 49,000 for Rugby. All seating in the new stadium will be under cover of a roof; however, the roof will not extend over the pitch.
We look forward to many exciting new sporting events will take place again in Lansdowne Road Aviva Stadium when it reopens in 2010.
